Her lavender leggings were the understated part but a sweet compliment to her multicolored voile skirt (she loves the twirl!) and her cotton t-shirt with a bright yellow sun on an orange background. Her shoes were the water shoes that she favored with their own color scheme, mostly the brown dirt from a child’s play. Her hair scrunch was Minnie, an entirely separate element. On her, it all worked. On her, it was magic.

When she came downstairs I told her I loved her ensemble. She reminded me that I had given her the t-shirt. How does a 3 year old remember that? Her mother asked, “do you remember who gave you the skirt?” She credited me again but I quietly doubted her. I’d given her one that was less wonderful but she wasn’t sure. Neither of us was sure.

“Smell it,” she said.

“Smell it?”

“Yes. Does it smell like your house?”

What an extraordinary test.

What an extraordinary child.
